Michiel Groeneveld is a Dutch guitarist, pianist and singer who has been around quite some time.
Originally based in the town of Deventer, The Netherlands, he witnessed and joined the 1970’s Deventer school rock scene and continued composing and recording music until this present day. Among the many projects Michiel took part in were several festivals and the historic performance at the notorious Deventer Parkpop Festival with members of Deventer bands Delay and Lady Lake in the late 1970’s. He went on playing keyboards in the band Checkpoint and later bands New Image and Ides Of May.
His musical journey broadened with solo projects including the music score for a movie about the restoration of the Dutch historic vessel Batavia and writing jingles and music for commercials and documentaries like Newtonmore Tales.
Michiel’s albums are mostly instrumental and his music is rather heavily influenced by Focus, Steely Dan and Gentle Giant, not to mention jazz influences by Dutch band Solution, Dave Brubeck and Yellow Jackets. His classical music is has clearly been influenced by Tsjaikovski, Grieg and Satie as we hear in Orchestral Works and Piano Pieces.
And now, after rather a long period of silence, all his work can now be listened to on Spotify and other streaming services. The recent album Flashback gives a splendid overview of his instrumental work.
A new album is out: Michael Sings ! Never made an album with new and rerecorded songs, now mixed and produced in Studio Spitsbergen with Bauke van der Laaken in 2022-'23. It reveals his appreciation for Beatles, Queen and CSN&Y.
This year there is the new single: Come In And Close The Door which shows his great love for close harmony once again. Whithin soon it will be sung by Poptoan, a choir where he sings in.
